The Volvo XC40 is One of the Safest Crossovers for Boston Drivers

The Volvo SUV is an IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus

For decades, Volvo has been known to Boston and Cambridge drivers as a vehicle brand that is focused on safety above all else. While Brookline and Newton drivers know that luxury and performance are also a huge part of the Volvo DNA, safety is certainly a focus point for the brand. So Volvo released their first ever compact crossover, the XC40, to the Lexington area, there was no doubt that it would immediately be one of the safest models in the category. And sure enough, the IIHS has named the 2019 Volvo XC40 a Top Safety Pick Plus, giving it good marks across the board in its evaluation.

How is the IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus Award Scored?

While many tests can be skewed based on what is being evaluated, the IIHS is an independent, safety-focused automotive testing organization that uses a series of quantifiable metrics to determine how safe a vehicle is (or isn’t).

Front crash tests determined that in small overlap frontal impacts on both the driver and passenger side, the XC40 is worthy of top marks in nearly every measurable category. This includes the potential for head and neck injury for both the passenger and driver, as well as chest and lower extremity injuries.

Furthermore, the restraints and seats earned the highest possible rating as well for both geometry and performance during an impact.

The series of advanced technologies that help prevent crashes was also put to the test, as Volvo City Safety earned a “superior” rating on even the most basic model. At both the 12 mph and 25 mph tests, the system was able to react and apply the brakes to avoid a collision entirely.
